We were watching all the footage from the Niger Delta so far with the girls during our last training week. I think this was the most important learning part so far. We pointed out the footage that was very nice. But also provided them with feedback about interviews being shot insight a house that were too dark, footage that was too shaky ('why didn't you use the tripod?'), the camera focussing on the background instead of the interviewee. But after a while we didn't need to say anything anymore and the girls took over providing feedback to their fellow trainees. At the end of the training they came up with a long list of footage they still needed to gather: redoing interviews, shooting more footage of interviewees in action to cover up jump-shots, getting interviews with people that were not available last time. Anyway, a very busy schedule again for the next two weeks. Besides a lot of learning we also went on tour with the girls through Abuja in a bus. The first stop was at Wuse market, a place where you can buy many colourful fabrics: "Divine Clothing - Dealers on Swiss laces, Sample Laces, Hollandais, Head-ties, Ghana Wax and Tie & Dyes", as one of the offices calls itself. We bought some nice fabrics with the help of the girls, who of course know what the best quality is for a reasonable price. On our way in the bus towards another place - the newest shopping mall in town - we got a total make-over. Generally speaking, both of us don't wear make-up. All our trainees, and Nigerian women in general, tend to wear make-up, change hairstyle every couple of weeks and appear in their finest clothes each and every day. Now they had their chance - we couldn't escape the bus - to have us as their dolls. They put on the just bought eye-liners, lipgloss and earrings to show and teach us how neatly we look Nigerian style. We learn too you know ;-) |
