The weekend in Yenagoa was saturated with religious songs from the neighbouring church. From Friday to Sunday a non-stop choir (24 hours) was singing the most powerful Christian songs to ease the lives of its attendants. While walking through the streets of Yenagoa my eyes were drawn towards the many posters and banners that were a kind of screaming about the power of Jesus and his powerful magic and how to avoid satanic manipulation. Religion is very much present in the daily lives of Nigerians. Notably as well in the lives of our participants, who were having their own Christian service on Sunday morning in the workshop space. We're now in the southern part of Nigeria. As the 'Encyclopedia of Nations' indicates, there is a high degree of tension between Christians in the South and Muslims in the North of Nigeria with a record of violence against both groups - read for example the latest articles about Nigeria in the Dutch national newspapers such as 'Volkskrant' and 'NRC'. However, conflicts may stem primarily from ethnic and regional differences. Then again, it wouldn’t be the first time to start conflicts in the name of whatever religion to cover up power conflicts..
